The first meeting of this Group was in May 2006 when there were five members. We now have two sub-Groups of around eight members that each meet on the third Tuesday of every month (at a separate venue - the home of a member). Initially we commenced by reading and enjoying each other's favourite poems, but we then decided to make the meetings more structured, and to this end a programme was developed. It was agreed that we would delve into the life and work of a particular poet at every other meeting, and in between we would select themes in poetry, for example, the seasons, flowers, animals etc. We have also read and discussed the poetry of the First World War and at another meeting, contrasted the poetry of both First and Second World Wars. To date we have profiled the following poets: Elizabeth Jennings, Edward Thomas, Thomas Hardy, and Charles Causley. Due to the limitations of space at members' homes, each sub-Group is limited in number and a waiting list has now been created. For more information email poetry@bracknellu3a.org.uk
